Ivy charging stations offer different charger types depending on location and driver needs. The main difference between Level 2 (L2) and Level 3 (DC fast) chargers is how quickly they can charge your vehicle.
This article explains how each charger type works and when you might want to use one over the other.
What is a level 2 (L2) charger?
Level 2 chargers are commonly found at workplaces, public parking areas, and destinations where vehicles are parked for longer periods of time.
- Uses AC (alternating current) power
- Provides a slower, steady charge
- Typically adds 20–40 km (12–25 miles) of range per hour
L2 chargers are ideal if you plan to stay parked for a few hours, such as while working, shopping, or dining.
💡 Good to know: Most electric vehicles are compatible with Level 2 charging.
What is a level 3 (DC fast) charger?
Level 3 chargers, also known as DC fast chargers, are designed for quick charging during longer trips.
- Uses DC (direct current) power
- Delivers much faster charging speeds
- Can add up to 100–300 km (60–185 miles) of range in 20–40 minutes, depending on your vehicle
DC fast chargers are best when you need to get back on the road quickly, such as during highway travel or long-distance trips.
⚠️ Note: Charging speed depends on your vehicle’s battery size, state of charge, and charging capability.
Which charger should I use?
Choosing the right charger depends on how long you plan to stop and how much charge you need.
- Use Level 2 if you’re parked for an extended period and don’t need a rapid charge
- Use Level 3 if you’re traveling and need a fast top-up
