Charging speed can vary from session to session, even when using the same charger. Several factors influence how quickly your vehicle charges at an Ivy station.
This article explains the most common factors that can affect charging speed so you know what to expect during a charging session.
Your vehicle’s charging capability.
Every electric vehicle has a maximum charging speed it can accept.
- Some vehicles can accept higher power from DC fast chargers, while others cannot
- Your vehicle’s onboard systems control how much power it can safely receive
💡 Tip: Even if a charger can deliver high power, your vehicle may limit the charging speed.
Your battery’s state of charge.
Charging speed slows down as your battery fills up.
- Charging is usually fastest when the battery is at a lower percentage
- As the battery approaches 80–100%, charging speed gradually decreases
This is normal behavior and helps protect your battery’s long-term health.
Charger type and power level.
The type of charger you use plays a major role in charging speed.
- Level 2 (L2) chargers provide slower, steady charging
- Level 3 (DC fast) chargers deliver much faster charging when supported by your vehicle
Not all vehicles can take full advantage of DC fast charging speeds.
Power sharing at charging stations.
Some charging stations share power between multiple chargers.
- If more than one vehicle is charging at the same station, available power may be split
- This can temporarily reduce charging speed
Charging speed may increase again once another vehicle finishes charging.
Temperature and weather conditions.
Extreme temperatures can impact battery performance.
- Cold weather may reduce charging speed until the battery warms up
- Very hot conditions can also cause charging to slow to protect the battery
Many vehicles automatically adjust charging speed to maintain safe battery temperatures.
What you can do to improve charging speed.
While some factors are outside your control, these tips may help:
- Start charging when your battery is at a lower percentage
- Use DC fast chargers when available and supported by your vehicle
- Precondition your battery if your vehicle supports it
The Ivy app and charger screen will always show real-time charging status during your session.
